50 Vehicle Pileup on Florida’s I-4

There was 50 vehicle pileup on Florida’s I-4 between Orlando and Tampa, early this morning (January 9, 2008). My son and I drove through there the evening before, and in fact reported the brush fire that reduced the visibility that contributed to the horrible accident. Although the visibility was reduced, there were other factors leading to the severity of that pileup…

Having lived in the Midwest, the Southwest, and the West… My move to Florida has convinced me that the worst drivers, the rudest drivers, and the most incompetent drivers are licensed to drive in the State of Florida.

I may do a future post on my thoughts as to how the poorly designed roads contribute to this… but for now, let’s concentrate on what the State of Florida needs to do, immediately, to help alleviate the problem.

SLOW DOWN THE TRUCKS! The trucking industry has always tried to portray commercial truck drivers as kind, compassionate, courteous, safe, and considerate drivers. In my experience driving in congested California traffic – Hwy 99 in the central valley, I-5 over the Grapevine, and throughout the LA and SF Bay areas… It is true. Truckers are good drivers, they are considerate, follow the laws, and courteous to all motorists.

I believe that part of the reason that truckers are courteous out west, is that trucks are given a separate status from automobiles. The most obvious is the truck speed limit of 55 mph. Automobiles stay out of truck lanes, trucks stay IN truck lanes, and usually obey the 55 mph speed limit. (Obviously, this behavior is encouraged by fair and consistent enforcement by the California Highway Patrol, and other traffic enforcement agencies.

Florida needs to enact and ENFORCE a truck speed limit of 55 mph! And they need to DO IT NOW! In the horrendous crash that occurred the morning of January 9, 2008, 20 semi’s were involved. Some overturned, some crushed automobiles, and some caught fire.

It’s ludicrous to encounter heavy truck traffic in EVERY lane of I-4 through the Orlando downtown area – yet it happens daily. It happens because trucks are allowed in all lanes, and allowed to travel at the same speed as automobile traffic. Why is that? Are the Florida legislators financially supported by the trucking industry? Or are they just simply stupid? Any person of intelligence knows that a fully loaded semi cannot stop in a distance equivalent to that of an automobile. Could this disparity in stopping distances be fully or partially to blame for the 50 vehicle pileup on I-4? Certainly it could have.

I also believe that some of the poor driving practices in Florida are caused by the rudeness of Florida drivers. For instance, vehicles in Florida always follow one another far too closely. Why? Because some rude driver will occupy your safety space, simply because he/she can, and it’s far more important that the rude driver arrive at their destination 35 seconds before you do!!

Did you know that in Florida, it must be against the law to ease off the gas and allow a vehicle signaling a lane change to actually change lanes? I’ve never seen in happen in Florida, yet even in the thickest of rush hours in LA, it happens all the time. Where is the courtesy that people give to others, in the State of Florida? Oh… it’s against the law? Courteous drivers exist in Georgia…

Come on, Florida legislators… let’s get the trucks slowed down and in their own lanes. Then let’s get the enforcement of traffic laws to the point that drivers realize that courtesy and safety can go hand in hand.

While I whole heartedly agree with your claim that there should be slower speeds and an expanded area of truck lanes restrictions, I don’t agree with everything. I too have lived all over the country and travelled all over the world. And, I can say without a doubt that Florida is not alone in having crappy drivers.

You’ve lived in the midwest. Ever drive in Chicago? People tell you not to signal because it shows the person behind you where you want to go, and then they cut you off. Every red light in Chicago features two drivers that “run the yellow” and make a turn.

You’ve lived in California. Ever drive in LA? Trucks may have their own lane, but the cars haul ass whe they can, so you have stop and gun-it traffic.

I won’t even start on drivers in New York.

Now, why do you think Florida has such crappy drivers? How about that as we have developed and more people have moved from the west and the midwest and the northeast, etc. to Florida, they bring their regional driving habits to our roads. Now what we have is a melting pot of the worst driving behaviors from around the country.

Now, we cannot forget that Florida also has something you forgot to mention: Good Samaritans. Every year, we read many stories about people that stop to help those in distress on our roads. Some offer a gas can, perhaps change a tire, or even help with injured motorists.

Yes, we need better laws and enforcement for commercial drivers, who are not saints. Most are driving well beyond the legal limit of their working week. But, it’s not all bad out there.

As a Floridian, let me say it more plainly: if you don’t like the driving here or if you think its better in California, please feel free to move back there and enjoy.

  2. Hi Rob,
I agree with most of what you’ve said. I have not driven in Chicago (the El worked well for me), but I have driven down-state (Kankakee, Joliet, Urbana, etc.) and I’ve not found the rudeness there, that I find in Florida drivers.

Please note, that I have not claimed Florida people are rude, in fact I’ve met some incredibly nice people, but something happens to them when they get behind the wheel. (Part of it, I suspect is road design – but that’s a future blog.)

I’m inclined to believe that a lot of the driving rudeness in Florida is learned in the northeast part of the country (NY?) and migrates here. However, I’m not sure that other parts of the country can be blamed as readily as you do. Nonetheless, you’re certainly entitled to that belief, and I am willing to accede the possibility.

I have driven LA, and yes, the cars do fly… but the drivers will let you change lanes, if you use a signal… And the slower drivers (call them speed limit compliant) will stay in the right hand lanes allowing the speedsters to pass.

As to your last comment,,, well, that’s kinda nasty, but if I could move elsewhere, I probably would. Not just to avoid the Florida driving habits, but to find a more pleasant place to live. Orlando offers little in culture, other than Mickey, the terrain is about as boring as a salt flat, the weather is crappy for most of the year, what little public land there is, is inhabited by homeless creeps that make it a frightening place to visit. I love the beaches, and the water is warm, but alas, I’m too old to learn to surf!

Anyway, thanks for your comments. I respect them and welcome them. Feel free to comment anytime.

  3. Hey, out here in on the 99 in central valley we had a 100-vehicle pile-up
That killed a small child and an adult in separate vehicles; do to a drunk from Texas and careless drivers and a small dense patch of fog. Big rigs, cars and anything with wheels ran into each other…but not all at once!!! Oh no for over a mile and half the collisions kept occurring. Drivers not injured were putting out fires and helping the injured. While hearing screeching tires and metal crunching far out of their sight as the pile up continued. This is not the first time or the last time and I’m sure it will happen again.
My point to all this is that self-serving sub-humans mind set is now the norm. There are now far too many so called Americans that have been aloud to do what they want, when they want, with out any repercussion or a fear of incarceration. These so called citizens have no class, no manners and certainly were reared by a heathen parent with no values or respect for anything or anyone, even themselves. Thus they have no concern for consequences of their actions, which is reflected in their behavior in everyday life such as driving a vehicle.
Maybe drivers training and education should be returned to the High Schools where I learned how to command a vehicle and obtained the necessary life long skills to learn some respect for others on the road……
